Pipe ramming is a trenchless method of pipeline installation that drives a casing or pipe through the ground using a pneumatic hammer. The hammer is attached to an open-ended casing, using an adapter and the percussive action of the hammer drives the casing into the ground. The spoil within the casing is removed as the casing is driven into place.

 

Pipe ramming is effective in all ground conditions especially where rocks or cobble are encountered. As the pipe rammer pushes the pipe or casing through the soil, rocks and boulders up to the diameter of the new casement are “swallowed up” and removed with the spoil.

Pipe ramming is ideal for casing installation designed for assisting directional drilling operations.

Casing of entry holes creates a sealed conduit reaching between the surface and consolidated ground to mitigate the risk of drilling activities undermining the ground and creating a sinkhole beneath the drilling rig. The drilling string and surrounding medium is contained within the casing and minimizes the risk of a frac-out or surface release of the drilling medium.

The casing is easily removed after drilling activates are complete, leaving a minimal footprint after remediation.

Pipe ramming is a preferred method for installations under railroads, embankments, roads, and landscapes as it is a truly cost-efficient and time-saving method that causes minimal disruption to surrounding soils. Pipe Ramming is a low impact activity, it causes little to no ground slump and minimizes underground voids.

 

Culvert replacement can be effectively achieved with pipe ramming. Casing of a larger diameter is driven over the length of the existing culvert. The deteriorated culvert is then extracted from the casing leaving in place a new and long lasting replacement conduit.
